ANIMAL SCIENCE FACULTY POSITION: Assistant or Associate Professor – Extension Veterinarian, 12 –
month, Non-Tenure track (100% Extension)
Position: The University of Arkansas System, Division of Agriculture’s Cooperative Extension Service,
Department of Animal Science is seeking applicants for a new faculty and Extension veterinarian to
provide statewide leadership in the development and implementation of Extension veterinary
educational programs designed to improve the health, welfare, and bio-security of livestock. The
position is 100% Extension with responsibilities in adult (70%) and youth (30%) education programs,
within the Department of Animal Science and located at the University of Arkansas Cooperative
Extension Service State Office in Little Rock. This position is supervised and programmatically reviewed
by the Department Head of Animal Science.
Required Qualifications: DVM degree and Arkansas Licensure required. The successful candidate must
have the ability to work with adults, youth, 4-H leaders, and county Extension agents. The candidate
must demonstrate the ability to work with groups as well as with individuals; to communicate
effectively, both verbally and in writing; to obtain and interpret up-to-date information; and to be an
effective team player. Experience with or willingness to learn new technology is essential.
Preferred Qualifications: The successful candidate will have practical knowledge of U.S. animal
agriculture, enabling him/her to work with public and private entities and agricultural producers in
Arkansas. Large animal practice experience is preferred; and USDA certification. Ability and interest to
effectively contribute to interdisciplinary teams should be a goal. Strong communication skills and the
ability to secure extramural funding to support applied research and extension programs are also
required.
Responsibilities: The successful candidate will be required to collaborate with interdisciplinary teams of
Extension faculty, research scientists and others to evaluate and deliver effective, integrated
veterinarian/animal welfare educational programs. Educational programs will be directed to practicing
veterinarians, producers, and professionals (e.g., animal welfare experts) working with livestock
producers and organizations.
The faculty member is expected to provide training, collaboration and support for county Extension
faculty and program planning committees for veterinary programs and work with 4-H Program
specialists in planning programs related to youth development and volunteer leader training. The
candidate will have 4-H responsibilities, and will serve as the content expert and assist the 4-H Youth
Livestock Instructor and other 4-H specialists with development of the Arkansas 4-H Veterinary Science
Program. The Veterinary Science Program consists of lessons, activities, field trips and camps in county
Vet Science clubs, in association with local veterinarians. The candidate will work with veterinarian
associations, commodity committees and others to develop youth and adult educational programs and
